Trees are nature’s pattern makers. I prefer wood grain that is very subtle but for a large piece like a desk or dining table it might be nice to have some thick, uneven lines throughout.

Stack pieces with different finishes and you’ll be surprised how good it looks. Here is a rustic, unfinished bowl on a dark lacquered coffee table.
